A fresh exam paper leak controversy has emerged from Odisha after photographs of a postgraduate medical examination question paper were shared on social media while the test was underway, reportedly after a student received them via WhatsApp.
According to a Hindustan Times report, the alleged breach took place on Monday during the General Surgery theory examination for the 2023–26 MS/MD batch. Images of the question paper reportedly surfaced on social media within minutes of the exam beginning.
A postgraduate student from a private medical college in Bhubaneswar, who shared the images, said he received the photos of the questions papers through a WhatsApp group created by a student from Berhampur, the report said.
Some students also alleged that answers were circulated from certain phone numbers while the examination was in progress, although this claim has not been independently confirmed.
OUHS Orders Internal Probe
Following the incident, the Odisha University of Health Sciences (OUHS) ordered an internal investigation. The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Manas Ranjan Sahoo, held a virtual meeting with principals of medical colleges and directed them to strengthen security measures for the remaining examinations, HT reported.
Meanwhile, MKCG Medical College Dean-cum-Principal Harekrushna Dalai said the incident should not be termed a paper leak, but rather a case of the question paper being “smuggled out of the examination hall” shortly after it was distributed.
“It is not a question paper leak. Had the question paper come out before the exam and reached the students, we could have termed it a leak. But, in this case, the question paper came out from the exam hall soon after the question papers were handed out. This is more like the question paper being smuggled out of the examination hall soon after it was distributed,” he said.
The incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of examination security following the NEET paper leak controversy, which triggered widespread student-led protests across the country.
The agitation, led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), lasted 36 days and drew lakhs of participants demanding action over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations. The protests ended after Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned over the weekend, with the CJP calling off its campaign following his resignation.
