Mumbai News: Despite heavy rain warnings across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), schools and colleges in Mumbai, Thane and Palghar are expected to remain open on Thursday, July 23, as no city-wide school closure or holiday has been announced so far by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) or other civic authorities.
The state government has empowered district collectors and deputy commissioners to take immediate decisions on school closures if weather conditions deteriorate in specific areas. Local authorities can suspend classes if situations such as flooding, severe waterlogging, landslides, blocked roads or other safety concerns affect students and staff.
Officials have clarified that decisions on school holidays will be based on real-time ground conditions in individual districts rather than a blanket statewide order.
Parents Advised To Check School And Local Authority Updates
With weather conditions likely to change rapidly within a few hours, parents and students have been advised not to depend only on general weather alerts.

IMD Issues Orange Alert For Thane And Palghar
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Thane and Palghar, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by occasional strong winds over the next few hours.
The weather department has forecast wind speeds of 50-60 kmph in these districts on Thursday, with intense rainfall activity expected across parts of the Konkan region.
Mumbai, meanwhile, remains under a yellow alert, with the IMD predicting intermittent strong winds at similar speeds and heavy rainfall spells in isolated areas across the city. Residents have been advised to remain cautious as weather conditions could change quickly.
Heavy Rain Forecast Across Konkan And Madhya Maharashtra
According to the IMD, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected over Konkan and Goa as well as Madhya Maharashtra. Isolated spells of extremely heavy rain are likely over the hilly and ghat regions of Madhya Maharashtra.
The ongoing spell of rain is being driven by active monsoon conditions, with moisture-laden winds strengthening rainfall activity along the Maharashtra coast. Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and surrounding suburbs have already witnessed intense showers, gusty winds and waterlogging in several areas.
Weather experts have warned that heavy downpours could trigger urban flooding, flash floods in vulnerable locations, landslides in hilly regions and reduced visibility on roads. Commuters have been advised to exercise caution while travelling, especially in areas prone to water accumulation and traffic disruptions.
Mumbai Rain Update: Heavy Showers And Strong Winds Continue
Mumbai and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) are expected to receive more spells of heavy rain amid the current monsoon surge.
Earlier forecasts indicated that Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Palghar could witness heavy rainfall with winds reaching 40-60 kmph. Coastal districts including Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, Raigad and Ratnagiri are likely to experience strong winds of up to 50-70 kmph along with very heavy rain and lightning activity.
The administration has urged residents to avoid unnecessary visits to beaches and coastal areas during adverse weather conditions. People travelling outdoors have also been advised to carry umbrellas and rain protection due to the possibility of sudden heavy showers.
Palghar, Shahapur And Ghat Areas Face Higher Rain Risk
Among the affected regions, Palghar district and Shahapur taluka are expected to receive some of the heaviest rainfall. Extremely heavy rain has been forecast in these areas during intense spells, raising concerns over possible flooding in low-lying locations.
The Nashik Ghat region is also likely to witness heavy rainfall, while rainfall activity is expected to continue across several parts of Maharashtra except some areas of Marathwada.
Rainfall estimates during the current spell indicate heavy showers in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Kalyan-Dombivli, while Palghar, Shahapur and Nashik Ghat areas could receive significantly higher rainfall, with isolated locations potentially recording extremely heavy showers.
Rain To Continue Across Maharashtra As Monsoon Remains Active
The current rainfall spell is expected to continue over Maharashtra for the next few days, with heavy showers likely across coastal and central parts of the state.
The active monsoon conditions have also improved inflows into reservoirs supplying water to Mumbai. Catchment areas of major dams have received good rainfall, with water levels expected to rise further.
However, weather experts have indicated that rainfall activity may reduce after the current spell, with a possible monsoon break towards the end of July. The development remains a concern for farmers due to the delayed arrival of monsoon and uneven rainfall distribution earlier in the season.
