Over the last few years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has moved from pilot projects to mainstream adoption, powering everything from personalised learning and teacher assistance to curriculum design and language translation.

On the occasion of AI Appreciation Day on July 16, here’s how AI is reshaping school education in India in recent times.

1. CBSE’s Expanding AI Education

AI is steadily becoming part of mainstream school education. After introducing Artificial Intelligence as a skill subject for higher grades, CBSE has expanded computational thinking and AI integration to younger classes, encouraging schools to build foundational AI literacy from an early age.

2. NCERT Training Teachers On AI

NCERT’s Central Institute of Educational Technology (CIET) has launched AI-focused initiatives to help teachers understand how generative AI, adaptive learning, and learning analytics can be used responsibly in classrooms. Recent training programs emphasise that AI should augment teachers—not replace them.

3. AI-Powered Teaching Assistants At Govt Schools

A government primary school in Kerala introduced “Iris,” an AI-powered teaching robot that supports classroom instruction through interactive lessons and voice-based learning. The initiative demonstrates how AI can complement teachers, especially in resource-constrained schools.

4. AI In Assessing Students

Schools and education platforms increasingly use AI to automate quizzes, generate instant feedback, and identify learning gaps. Teachers receive actionable insights that help them tailor instruction for individual students.

5. Breaking Language Barriers

NCERT has also used AI and machine learning to translate textbooks into multiple Indian languages, improving access to quality educational resources. Students can also use various AI tools to learn any Indian or foreign language they wish to.

Beyond software, many schools are establishing skill labs, smart classrooms, and AI-enabled learning environments to prepare students for technology-driven careers. It is now being embedded into curriculum design, teacher professional development, classroom instruction, and student assessment as part of India’s long-term education strategy under NEP 2020.

AI is expected to augment, not replace, teachers in Indian schools. AI-powered teaching assistants and smart classrooms are being integrated to support instruction and prepare students for technology-driven careers. Tools like Zoho’s Classes 2.
