Arts continues to dominate higher education in India, emerging as the most popular undergraduate (UG) discipline, while Social Sciences account for the highest enrolment at the postgraduate (PG) level, according to the latest All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2023-24 report.
Bachelor of Arts (BA) recorded the highest number of graduates at 24.4 lakh, followed by Bachelor of Science (BSc) with 11.5 lakh, and Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) with 9.6 lakh, the report added. Bachelor of Engineering (BE)/Bachelor of Technology (BTech) recorded 8.2 lakh graduates and diploma programmes accounted for 9.1 lakh pass-outs.
At the postgraduate level, Master of Arts (MA) recorded the highest number of graduates at 7.5 lakh, followed by Master of Science (MSc) with 3.6 lakh, Master of Business Administration (MBA) with 2.8 lakh, and Master of Commerce (MCom) with 1.8 lakh graduates.
The report shows that the total number of students passing out from higher education institutions remained steady at around 1.1 crore in 2023-24, similar to the previous year.
Arts Dominates UG, PG Enrolment
Among undergraduate programmes, BA (including BA Hons.) remains the most preferred course, with 1.3 crore students, accounting for 38.6% of total UG enrolment. This is followed by BSc (including BSc Hons.) with 53.4 lakh students (15.7%), BE/BTech with 43.2 lakh students (12.7%), and BCom (including BCom Hons.) with 40.8 lakh students (12%).
At the PG level too, MA is the most enrolled programme with 22.6 lakh students, representing 39.5% of total PG enrolment. MSc follows with 9.9 lakh students (17.4%), MBA with 9.6 lakh (16.9%), and MCom with 4.5 lakh students (7.8%).
Engineering Ranks 3rd In Student Enrolment
Across all levels of higher education, Arts continues to have the highest enrolment, with 1.1 crore students, of whom 53.9% are women. It is followed by Science with 45.7 lakh students, of which 53.4% are females. Engineering and Technology rank third with 43.9 lakh students, with 31.1% female enrolment.
Commerce is at fourth with 40.8 lakh students, including 48% female enrolment. Medical Science at fifth rank with 21.3 lakh students, and 57.4% female enrolment. Education has 17.8 lakh students, with 64.2% female enrolment.
The report further stated Arts also produced the largest number of graduates in 2023-24, with 24.4 lakh students completing their degrees, 55.2% of whom were women. Science ranked second with 11.4 lakh graduates, including 53.9% women, followed by Commerce with 10.1 lakh graduates, of whom 51.5% were women. Engineering and Technology recorded 8.3 lakh graduates, while Education produced 7.7 lakh graduates, with women accounting for 64.3% of the total. Medical Science saw 3.8 lakh graduates, of whom 59.6% were women.
