State governments and education departments have announced several important decisions regarding school operations in response to changing weather conditions and local circumstances. While some regions have declared summer vacations due to extreme heat, others have closed schools because of heavy rainfall and adverse monsoon conditions. Public holidays have also been announced in certain states for special occasions, and school timings have been revised in some areas to safeguard students’ health. Here’s a look at the latest updates from across the country.

Jammu and Kashmir: Summer Vacation Announced

Amid rising temperatures in the Kashmir Valley, the Directorate of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) has declared summer vacations for all government and recognised private schools up to the higher secondary level. Schools will remain closed from July 6 to July 19, 2026, with regular classes resuming on July 20.

The decision comes after a prolonged spell of hot weather and repeated requests from parents and students for an early summer break.

Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister Sakina Ittoo also shared the announcement on X, urging students, teachers, and school staff to stay safe during the vacation. She advised students to remain hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and use the break for rest, study, and spending time with family.

Maharashtra: Schools Closed Due to Heavy Rainfall

Ongoing heavy rains and worsening monsoon conditions have prompted the district administrations of Palghar and Raigad to declare a holiday for all primary, secondary, and higher secondary schools.

The move has been taken as a precaution to ensure student safety during adverse weather conditions. However, school principals, teachers, and non-teaching staff have been directed to remain present at their schools or offices and assist the local administration in disaster management activities if required.

Mumbai University Postpones Examinations

The impact of heavy rainfall has also affected higher education. Mumbai University has postponed all examinations scheduled in colleges located within Palghar district and the Panvel Municipal Corporation area.

The university has stated that revised examination dates will be announced on its official website. Students whose exams have been postponed are advised to check the university website regularly for further updates.

West Bengal Declares Public Holiday

The West Bengal government has declared July 6 a public holiday to mark the 125th birth anniversary of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee. Government offices and educational institutions across the state will remain closed on the occasion.

Uttar Pradesh: School Timings Revised in Noida

With temperatures continuing to remain high in Noida, the district administration has revised school timings for students from Classes 1 to 8.

Under the new schedule, schools will operate only during morning hours until further notice. Officials said the decision was taken to reduce the risk of heatstroke and other heat-related illnesses among young children.

Weather conditions continue to differ significantly across India, with some regions experiencing intense heat and others facing persistent rainfall. In response, state governments and education authorities are taking location-specific decisions on school closures, examinations, holidays, and class timings to ensure both student safety and the continuity of education.
