IITs have allegedly advised students to remove JEE and GATE ranks, scores, percentiles, and other entrance examination-related details from their resumes. According to a screenshot of an email circulating widely online, the directive was issued in line with guidelines from the All IIT Placement Committee (AIPC). The communication, reportedly sent by a Career Development Centre (CDC), stated that all IITs are expected to follow the guidelines to ensure uniformity during the upcoming placement and internship cycle.
The email stated, “As per the guidelines issued by the All IIT Placement Committee (AIPC), students are advised not to include JEE Rank, GATE Rank, marks, scores, percentile, or similar examination ranking details in their resumes/CVs.”
Students were also asked to review their resumes and remove such information before submitting them for placement or internship processes.
“All IITs are expected to comply with these guidelines to maintain uniformity from the upcoming placement and internship cycle. Therefore, students are requested to review their resumes and ensure that such details are removed before submitting them for any placement or internship-related activities. Kindly treat this as an important compliance requirement and update your resumes accordingly. For any clarification, please contact the CDC team through your respective student coordinators,” the mail read.
To Keep Or Not Keep Marks? Debate On Social Media
The alleged directive has triggered debate on social media, with several users criticising the move and arguing that JEE ranks reflect years of effort and academic achievement. Some users claimed that removing such details could undermine recognition of merit.
IITs are telling students to remove JEE ranks, GATE ranks, percentiles and scores from resumes in the name of “uniformity.”Why should hard earned achievements be hidden? While another user stated, “IITs’ placement cell is asking students not to disclose their JEE & GATE ranks, marks, scores, percentiles in their CVs. Why? So that reserved category students don’t feel bad. India is the only country in the world, where students are being asked to hide their Merit.”

Others supported the guideline, arguing that entrance examination performance is only an entry-level measure and that recruiters should primarily evaluate candidates based on skills, CGPA, projects, internships, and interview performance. Some also pointed out that high entrance exam ranks do not always translate into better workplace performance and that automated resume screening systems may place excessive weight on such credentials.
“Won’t this rather improve a CV? Like mentioning only the Required Skills for the Job? or am I looking at something wrongly?” said one X user.
“It’s a good step towards building an inclusive and harmonius campus and society. Anyone who flouts this rule should be treated as a criminal,” said another.
